ONION

ONION

INTRODUCTION:-

Ø  India is the second largest onion producer in the world.

Ø  Indian onions are famous for their pungency and are available throughout the year.

Ø  Indian onion has two crop cycles, the first harvesting starts from November to January and the second harvesting is from January to May.

Ø  Onion is a hardy cool-season biennial but is usually grown as an annual crop.

Ø  Onion has narrow, hollow leaves and a base that enlarges to form a bulb.

Ø  The bulb may be white, yellow or red and requires 80 to 150 days to mature

Ø  Onion crop can be successfully grown on heavy soil with the use of organic manure before sowing and the preparation of the field should be very good for onion cultivation.

The optimum pH range is 6.0 – 7.5, regardless of soil type, but onions can also be grown in lightly alkaline          soils.
