INTRODUCTION:-

  • Ø  Watermelon originated in South Africa. It is an important fruit in India.
  • Ø  Watermelon is grown for its large edible fruit in favorable climates from tropical to temperate regions around the world, and is botanically called pepo.
  • Ø  Sweet, juicy usually dark red to pink in color, with many black seeds, although seedless varieties do exist.
  • Ø  The fruit can be eaten raw or pickled, and the peel is edible after cooking. It can also be consumed as a juice or as an ingredient in mixed beverages.
  • Ø  It is an excellent desert fruit and its juice consists of 92% water along with proteins, minerals and carbohydrates.
  • Ø  Watermelon is mainly cultivated in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

1] Time of sowing – In the north it is sown in mid-January to March and November to December.

2] Seed rate – 1.5 to 2 kg seed is required for sowing in one acre of land.

 3] Spacing – The spacing may vary depending on the method of sowing. In pit method, the row to row distance between two plants is 2-3.5 m and use 60 cm.

4] Irrigation – Regular interval as per requirement
